Picture postcard «100 years Goldau Nature Reserve and Wildlife Park»

Goldau Nature Reserve and Wildlife Park was founded in the landslide area around Goldau in 1925. It houses around 100 native and European wild animal species in near-natural and animal-friendly conditions, including the bearded vulture. For around 100 years, this majestic bird of prey was nowhere to be seen in Switzerland. Why? Vilified as a lamb killer and child predator, it was categorized as a harmful species in the 1875 game law, and a bounty was placed on it. When this scavenger then ran out of sources of food, it became extinct in the Alps at the beginning of the 20th century. From 1978, reintroduction projects brought a turnaround: as of 2025, 260 bearded vultures hatched in zoos and breading centres have already been released, 12 of which come from Goldau Nature Reserve and Wildlife Park.
