Picture 1 of 1

As they wiggle, spray water and turn, the ten figures in the Carnival Fountain in Basel are reminiscent of actresses or dancers on a stage. The work of art designed by Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) is an example of his creativity as a pioneer of kinetic art, where movement is a central element. His machine sculptures are often motorized, make noises and can be activated at the touch of a button. Tinguely’s works are playful, sometimes ironic, and they question the perfection of technology. In this way, the Swiss artist wanted to stimulate reflection on technological progress and industrialization. The world’s largest collection of his works is on display at the Tinguely Museum – also in Basel, the city where Tinguely grew up. In 2025, he would have turned 100.
