Picture 1 of 1
Scan the stamps and win amazing prizes in the photo competition. Along with woolly rhinos, woolly mammoths were the biggest Ice Age animals in Europe. Evidence of their presence has been found at many spots in Switzerland, dating back some 115,000 years. Mammoths lived in Switzerland for around 100,000 years before migrating to cooler climes and eventually dying out completely 4,000 years ago. One of the richest archaeological sites in Switzerland is Niederweningen (ZH), home of the Mammoth Museum dedicated to the history of these giants. On the two stamps, these primitive giants have been depicted based on the latest scientific findings.
