Block of four «750 years Lausanne Cathedral»
Picture 1 of 1
Lausanne Cathedral was consecrated 750 years ago. At the heart of this commemorative stamp is its remarkable rose window. Built between 1205 and 1232, it has a diameter of around eight metres. Large parts of the window are still made up of the glass elements dating from the Middle Ages. They illustrate the view of the world at that time. In addition to the signs of the zodiac, the outer ring shows the four rivers of paradise and the personifications of the twelve winds. The semicircles around the centre represent the seasons and months. In the middle is God, seated on a throne, surrounded by four episodes from Genesis: the division between light and darkness, between land and sea, the creation of the sun, moon and fish, and the creation of animals, man and woman.
