Select just the right felt tip or fibre-tipped pen
The following criteria will help you to find the most suitable felt tip.
- Ink type: Felt tips and fibre-tipped pens are made using water or pigment-based ink. Water-based ink dries quickly. It tends to bleed through if it comes into contact with water. Pigment-based ink is insoluble in water and light-resistant. That means colours don’t fade or smudge so easily.
- Line thickness: The nibs of felt tips and fibre-tipped pens differ in terms of thickness. Thinner nibs are required for finer drawing. Wider ones are better for easily filling in large areas.
- Packaging: lightweight cardboard, flexible plastic cover or robust metal case – the choice is yours.
- Pen design: Felt tips and fibre-tipped pens are available in rounded or triangular form. Some models, such as Faber-Castell, have an additional grip to make holding the pen easier.
Preventing felt tips and fibre-tipped pens from drying out
Remember the following pointers to stop your felt tips drying out and to ensure they last longer:
- Put the lids on properly
- Don’t leave your pens lying around open
- Store your pens in an upright position
- Put minimal pressure on the nib
- Use your pens regularly
- Keep your pens in a cool, dry place
Getting dried-up felt tips and fibre-tipped pens to work again
If the ink of your felt tip or fibre-tipped pen has dried up, you don’t have to throw it away.
Wet the nib carefully using a damp cloth or sponge.
Press the pen carefully on a piece of paper and move it back and forth. This will loosen the dried-up ink.
Some felt tips are refillable. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your pens.
Felt tips and fibre-tipped pens for children
Felt tips for children should be long-lasting and easy to use.
Washable felt tips are ideal as the ink usually comes out of fabric easily.
The pens should be robust and unbreakable as children often put lots of pressure on them. Thicker nibs are more suitable for younger children, while thinner ones allow older children to draw with greater precision.
